SUMMARY OF VISA EXEMPTION COUNTRIES AND EXEMPTION DURATION FOR VIETNAM

On March 7, 2025, the Government issued Resolution No. 44/2025, granting visa exemption to citizens of 12 designated countries. Eligible individuals may stay in Vietnam for 45 days from the date of entry, regardless of passport type or purpose of entry, provided they meet Vietnam’s legal entry requirements. This visa exemption policy applies from March 15, 2025, to March 14, 2028, and may be extended in accordance with Vietnamese law.

1. Vietnam Visa Exemption

Vietnam visa exemption (also known as visa-free entry to Vietnam) refers to the policy by which the Vietnamese government allows foreign nationals to enter and stay in Vietnam for a specified period without having to apply for a Vietnam visa or pay any related visa fees.

2. Cases of Vietnam Visa Exemption

According to Article 12 of the Law on Entry, Exit, Transit, and Residence of Foreigners in Vietnam 2014, as amended by Clause 7, Article 1 of the 2019 Amendment Law, the following cases are eligible for visa exemption:

- Under international treaties to which Vietnam is a signatory.

- Holders of permanent residence cards or temporary residence cards in accordance with Vietnamese law.

- Entry into border-gate economic zones and special administrative-economic units.

- Entry into coastal economic zones designated by the Government, provided that they meet the following conditions: having an international airport, a separate geographic space, clearly defined boundaries separated from the mainland, and compliance with socio-economic development policies while not affecting national defense, security, public order, and safety.

- Under Vietnam’s unilateral visa exemption policy.

- Vietnamese people residing overseas who have passports or laissez-passers issued by foreign authorities, foreigners being their spouses or children; foreigners being spouses and children of Vietnamese citizens shall be granted visa-free entry as prescribed by the government.

3. List of Countries Eligible for Vietnam Visa Exemption for Ordinary Passport Holders

As of now, Vietnam grants visa exemptions to citizens of 29 countries holding ordinary passports, with varying durations of stay depending on the country.

Cases of Unilateral Visa Exemption

On March 7, 2025, the Government issued Resolution No. 44/2025, granting visa exemption to citizens of 12 designated countries. Eligible individuals may stay in Vietnam for 45 days from the date of entry, regardless of passport type or purpose of entry, provided they meet Vietnam’s legal entry requirements. This visa exemption policy applies from March 15, 2025, to March 14, 2028, and may be extended in accordance with Vietnamese law.

On January 15, 2025, the Government issued Resolution No. 11/NQ-CP on visa exemption under the Tourism Stimulus Programme for 2025 for citizens of the Republic of Poland, the Czech Republic, and the Swiss Confederation. Under this policy, citizens of these three countries are granted visa-free entry to Vietnam for up to 45 days from the date of arrival, exclusively for tourism purposes under programs organized by Vietnamese international travel service enterprises. This exemption applies regardless of passport type, subject to compliance with Vietnam’s legal entry requirements. The policy is effective from March 1, 2025, to December 31, 2025.

Additionally, under Resolution No. 80/NQ-CP exemption of visas for foreigners entering Phu Quoc economic zone in Kien Giang province, issued in 2020, visa exemption is granted for foreign nationals entering Phu Quoc Economic Zone. Citizens of all countries are allowed visa-free entry into Phu Quoc for a stay of up to 30 days.

4. Passport Requirements for Visa-Exempt Entry into Vietnam

According to Article 20 of the Law on Entry, Exit, Transit, and Residence of Foreigners in Vietnam (2014), as amended in 2019, foreign nationals entering Vietnam under a visa exemption must meet the following passport requirements:

- The passport must be valid for at least six (6) months from the date of entry.

- The passport must contain at least two (2) blank pages for immigration stamps.

- The foreigner is not suspended from entry under Vietnamese immigration regulations.
